Despite having an unbeaten run in the English Premier League (EPL), Tottenham Hot Spurs have to wait for the next season for them to return to the English Football League (EFL) cup after losing 2-1 to Liverpool on Tuesday, 25 Oct. 2016 at Anfield.
Daniel Sturridge was the hero of the day after scoring double for the Kops. His first came at the 9th minute after Grujic nipped, his low, deflected ball into the box which was soon fired to the back of the net by Sturridge. Sturridge’s double came at the 64th minute after Wijnaldum slotted a pass through the middle of Spurs’ defence only to find Sturridge who placed it just at the middle of the back of the net.
Spurs’ response came at the 76th minute when Janssen scored on the spot following Lucas’ foul on Lamela at the 18 yard box. Tottenham’s efforts to level the game proved to be futile when most of their chances could not reach the back of the net. The full time whistle at Anfield proved Spurs’ later goal to be a mere consolation and it implied that they had to call it quits to the EFL.
The Kops should have won with a wider margin but Klopp was delighted on his team’s performance especially following his alterations on his squad with the likes of Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho, and Firminho intentionally sitting on the bench. He also showered praises on Sturridge claiming that his team is safe on his hands even without the trio that sat on the bench. All Sturridge’s six goals for this season have come in this League hence Klopp might be forced to feature him in all the fixtures of this competition.
Pochettinho fielded a youthful line up but they struggled to make impact on the visiting side. However he described the young stars as ‘’very important for the future’’ following their 91.2 % passing accuracy.
