The CECAFA women football Championship held at FUFA Technical centre in Njeru, Jinja municipality witnessed shocking performances as Uganda and Ethiopia battled for the third place in the tournament. This game was held yesterday, Tuesday, 20th September 2016 which saw Uganda mysteriously losing the game by 1-4 hence making the hosts (Uganda) finish fourth in the tournament and Ethiopia finishing third.
Uganda were the favourites at the Genesis of the game. As a matter of fact they were the first put a ball at the back of the net just at the 5th minute, thanks to one Hasssifa Nassuna. This goal marked her six for the tournament. There was a lot of confusion among the Ethiopian team as the Jinja based fans for the home team supported their team from the onset. Everything seemed well for Uganda during the first 15 minutes of the game.
Hell broke loose at the 16th minute when the Ethiopians put one past the Uganda’s goal keeper, thanks to one Erhima Zeregan hence levelling the game. Ethiopia later settled down and started playing normal football. Just a minute before the break (44th minute), another shock was unveiled for the home side when Zeregan put another one at the back of the net. The first half ended with Ethiopia leading 2-1.
After learning a lesson from the first half, the home team seemed be ready to make amendments at the second half but all in vain. The first quarter of the second half was goal less as both teams were determined to finish third. At the 71st minute, another plight befell the home team as Zeregan netted a hat-trick hence making the score 1-3. This later gave the home side a 2 goal deficit. At the 80th minute, Ethiopia scored another one, thanks to Losa Abera and surely I bet even the home side realised they had lost the game as this came to pass when the referee blew the last whistle when the game was still 1-4 in favour of Ethiopia.
