Ruthless Uganda Crested Cranes stun Zanzibar

The football game between the Uganda women’s national football team and Zanzibar women’s national football team on Tuesday, 13th-sept-2016 during the CECAFA women football tournament at the FUFA Technical centre in Njeru, Jinja municipality  ended with an outstanding score margin when Uganda whipped Zanzibar 9-0. This was a group A game. Such score margins are rarely heard in football and I bet upon hearing of such a score margin from female teams, one’s mind goes straight to netball, but anyway it was a football result.

The hard to hear goal margin was a serious humiliation to the island nation. This was the second game of the day on match day three of the tournament that has culminated into 33 goals in just 5 games. The game between the island nation, Zanzibar and the hosts, Uganda was highly paced composed of deadly passes especially from the mid fielders. On the same match day, Kenya Harambe Starlets hit Burundi 4-0. However on match day 2 Kenya beat Uganda 4-0, the same way as Burundi on match day 3.

Hasifa Nassuna netted home 4 goals although her 5th was denied on claims that she was offside. There was also a double set of goals from Fazilah Ikwaput and Laki Otandeka and Christine Nanbirige’s single sealing an excellent win for the hosts.

At the onset of the game, the hosts seemed to be shaky only to settle when the balls started to continuously hit the back of the net. Ikwaput had chances to score but failed to convert many chances into goals. The hosts took 40 minutes to open scoring that came from Hasifa Nassuna’s deadly penalty after a handball by Zanzibar’s Fatuma Khatibu at the goal keeper’s box. 2 minutes later Fazilah Ikwaput made it 2-0. Ikwaput later got her second for the day and the fourth for the hosts with a classy goal that could not be stopped by Zanzibar’s goal keeper.

The match was refereed by Burundi’s Suari Iratunga. The tournament will continue on Wednesday, 14 September 2016 with only one match between Ethiopia and Rwanda.
