The 2016/2017 UEFA champion’s league (UCL) day one opening matches on Tuesday, 13th-sept-2016 witnessed serious drama and classy performances. The football game between Paris Saint Germain and Arsenal at Parc des Princes witnessed PSG’S Edinson cavani strike the first goal of the 2016/2017 UCL season and PSG’s quickest goal in all UCL competitions in the 42nd second of the game. It was no doubt that PSG took control of the ball and I bet that Cavani and his tame mates should be ashamed of themselves after failing to put most of the golden balls at the back of the net.
Since the first goal of the game came in the first minute of the game, the two teams played for the other 44 minutes without putting any other ball at the back of the net. PSG had a series of golden chances only to be wasted by Cavani and his mates. Arsenal must consider themselves lucky to only concede one goal at the break. None the less Arsenal’s danger man Alexis Sanchez tried to bring the Emirates Stadium based club on board but all in vain.
After surviving to be hit badly at the first half and the earlier minutes of the second half, Arsenal levelled at the 77th minute through the 2016 COPA America winner, Alexis Sanchez. Alexis’ strike was a set back to the hosts as it was certain that levelling the game at the last quarter of the game would cost them 2 points which later came to pass when the referee blew the final whistle when the game was still 1-1. Both sides ended a man down after Olivier Giroud and Marco Verratti were sent off.
On giving his post-match remarks, Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger claimed that they have experience in the UCL and such a late come back to the game does not surprise him. The French man also showered praises on the man between the poles, David Ospina who was put in place of Petr Cech. PSG coach Unai Emery was disappointed with the result but was happy with the class of football displayed by his side.
Meanwhile while at Camp Nou, there was no rain but there was a serious flood of goals as FC Barcelona hit Celtic 7-0 with the usual suspects dubbed by soccer pundits as MSN to mean Messi, Suarez and Neymar all scored. This game also witnessed Messi’s 40th career hatrick and an Andres goal. Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers however urged that the result does not shock him because such score margins can even be witnessed when Barca is playing a team better than team.
However the game between Manchester City and Borussia Monchengladbach was postponed after a serious down pour hit the Etihad stadium. The match will now be played on Wednesday, 14th-sept-2016 at 1845GMT.
In other match day one results; Bayern Munich 5-0 FC Rostov, Napoli 2-1 Dynamo Kiev, FC Basel 1-1 Ludogorets, PSV Eindhoven 0-1 Atletico Madrid and Benfica 1-1 Besiktas. Wednesday, 14 September 2016 fixtures are; Tottenham vs. Monaco, Leicester City vs. Club Bruge, Real Madrid vs. Sporting and Juventus vs. Sevilla. All these games are to be played at 21;45, East African Time.
