If you are a fan or follower of the Azam Uganda Premier League and you have never heard of a team called Onduparaka United Football Club, then you are like an English Premier League follower who has never heard about a team called Leicester City .It’s now a common word being mentioned by football pundits and die hard local soccer fans The Azam Uganda Premiere League (AUPL) new boys, Onduparaka FC (Caterpillars) on Tuesday, 6th-9-2016 proved that they are not easy to get by. Onduparaka played Express FC (The Red Eagles) at Muteesa 11 stadium, Wankulukuku that saw the two sides share points after a heated second half that led to a 1-1 draw.
The first half of the game was not so entertaining hence no team scored. However, just on the second minute of the second half, Express FC scored through John Ssemazi after placing Mike Mutyaba’s corner at the back of the net. The Red Eagles had plenty of chances at the second half but they could not put a second ball at the back of the net.
As the second half heated due to the Caterpillars piling more pressure on the Red Eagles,, Rashid Toha popularly known by the staunchest fans likeFesto Atiku as ‘’Mertasacker’’ scored for the Caterpillars after heading home Wahab Twaha’s curvy free kick hence levelling the game. Rashid Toha who comes from Adjumani is currently wanted by a couple of South Sudan team who could not believe that he does not play for the Cranes. The caterpillars piled more pressure on the Red Eagles on to be rescued by the last whistle. Local soccer pundits like Wilberforce Oloya says that the story of Onduparaka is not different that of Leicester City
When giving his post-match remarks, the Onduparaka coach Leo Andra said that he was that he was impressed by his side’s performance basing on the fact that they are new in the league. Onduparaka is to play defending champions KCCA FC this Friday, 9th-9-2016 which is believed by local football pundits to be a David vs. Goliath game basing on the fact that the game has already sold out. On the other hand Express is to play The Saints.
Festo Aiku, a resident of Onduparaka and one of the staunchest fans says that he has been watching this team playing since 2011 when it was formed to play inter-village football competitions. He says that the Caterpillars always emerged champions for a series of village competitions and there classy performance does not surprise him although the new fans are still in a shock. The team also seems to be working in accordance to their motto, ‘’The Struggle Continues.’’
